RV Road Trip Entertainment: Reading for Kids and Adults

Since we are on the subject of entertainment while on the road, I should mention that my husband and I both like to read. The iPad, or Kindle, is the perfect thing to take with us on our RV road trip because it can hold thousands of books in one tiny space-saving tablet.

That being said, I still plan on taking a few other actual books with us. While I love the iPad, I am not a huge fan of reading on it. It’s best for me if I can at least switch back and forth from iPad to real book. I hope to be able to find a few used bookstores along the way where we can buy a great book at one store and sell it at the next. Or better yet, trade our book in for a different one, thus never spending a dime.

If spending is a concern for you, like it is for us, one thing to know is that you can get all sorts of free classic books through the Kindle or Kindle app on the iPad. This means we can read great stories like: Les Miserables, The Scarlet Letter, Wuthering Heights, A Tale of Two Cities, Moby Dick, Anna Karenina, Jane Eyre and Crime and Punishment without spending a dime on downloading new books. They have free children’s books too like: The Jungle Book, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Grimm’s Fairy Stories, The Wind in the Willow, The Secret Garden and Treasure Island. They are not illustrated, but if you read them aloud to your children they are sure to love them.

You can find more free books to download by going to Amazon.com and looking at the Literary Fiction section under the Kindle e Books department. You can also purchase many other ebooks including travel guides to help you on your journey.

Road Trip with Baby - How to Keep Him Entertained

The last post was about the games that will keep my husband and me entertained. Now I want talk about what I plan to take to keep my baby entertained. My kid has so many toys that he plays with on a daily basis. It would make it so much easier if only he could tell me what he wants to pack.

So how do I choose which will come? I am going to choose the toys that can keep him busy and that he can play with in many different ways. I also will be favoring any toy that will help him learn at multiple age stages, since we will be on the road for some time. I also have to keep in mind storage space.

One of my kid’s favorite toys is his xylophone. This I should tell you will not be making it on our journey simply because it plays music as it rolls along the ground. I can just imagine driving along and constantly hearing “London Bridge is Falling Down” playing in the back of the RV. So no, this will not come even though it is one of his prize possessions.

One of the first toy sets I will pack is a set of water toys that we got at Target. The set includes a frog, a duck and a turtle stuffed animal that are designed for bath time. What I love about these is that they can act as multiple types of toys: stuffed animals, bath time toys and even a swim time floating device. I do not have to worry about them getting dirty because they are easy to wash and dry quickly.

Another toy set that my kid loves is his Soft Baby Blocks that come with his name custom designed on them as well as with numbers, shapes and animals. He has loved playing with these for the last six months and will probably continue to play with them for the next year. They are really wonderful in helping him learn motor-skills, building, spelling his name, learning letters, numbers and helping him identify various shapes and animals. You can order your own set of personalized Soft Baby Blocks at: http://www.etsy.com/shop/SoftBabyBlocks. You can also get a set with fruit and vegetables to start them on a path of healthy eating.

Another toy we will be taking is a noise ball that helps him learn shapes. It plays music when you throw it (and has an off switch). It is open in the center and you can drop plastic shapes through it. Even though it takes up a bit of space, it is sturdy and gives him a great ball to kick around when he gets a bit older. Also we can store it in the compartments under the RV, saving us space inside the RV. He has a soft stuffed soccer ball that he loves to play with that I am going to consider taking too.

We will also be taking a couple of books for him. He loves his Very Hungry Caterpillar book, which helps learn numbers and foods. He also loves his Curious George books and doll. I love that even at 10 months he gets excited to read when we bring out the stuffed monkey and book. I want to take these to continue his excitement for reading. We will also bring his children’s illustrated Bible so he has plenty of awesome illustrated stories to read.

I know this sounds like a lot, but all the stuffed toys can be compressed to fit easily in the RV. To do this I will put each toy in a Ziplock bag and suck all the air out of it with a straw.  The books do not take up much space and the noise ball can be stored below the RV. All of these toys should give him plenty of learning fun when he is not out and about discovering the world and playing with sticks and leaves.

RV Road Trip Games: 3 Great Games & Space-Saving Tips for Packing Them

I may be jumping ahead in our trip planning, but I already know how I plan to solve one of the issues we all must face while on vacation: how to do we entertain ourselves? I plan on seeing the sights, going on hikes and taking many photographs, but what about at night?

I got excited after Christmas this year, which is why I’m jumping ahead to one of the least important topics for planning an RV road trip. On Christmas day I opened a small package to find a Cribbage board inside. I grew up playing this game and my husband and I play all the time. This was the perfect gift since our current travel Cribbage board has lost most of its pegs. The Cribbage board got me thinking about what games we should take with us while on the road.

Like all other items I will be packing, I need to consider the limited space we will have. I also of course need to consider what games we prefer to play at home on rainy days. I found my answer in our game closet.  Yes, we have an entire closet filled with games and puzzles, which is why this decision may be slightly more difficult for us than for others.

The games that I have chosen for us are a few of our go-to games: Cribbage, Sequence and Blokus. Blokus unfortunately has a large game board and requires several pieces to play. Sequence also has a board as well as several small tokens. The great thing about Sequence is that it is played with two decks of cards. Not only can the cards be used for various card games, like Cribbage, the tokens can be used as chips in a friendly game of poker. Being able to use the things we pack for various uses extends to even our games.

For space saving here is what I plan to take all the packaging out of the Blokus box. Then I will take all the pieces and game boards for the other games and place them under the Blokus game board in the box. This should keep all the games in one easy to get to and space-saving place.

These 3 games should fit easily in the RV and will provide us with hours of fun. Of course if we go to pack and they don’t fit, I will only be taking the Cribbage board and two decks of cards.
