Road Trip with Baby - How to Keep Him Entertained

The last post was about the games that will keep my husband and me entertained. Now I want talk about what I plan to take to keep my baby entertained. My kid has so many toys that he plays with on a daily basis. It would make it so much easier if only he could tell me what he wants to pack.

So how do I choose which will come? I am going to choose the toys that can keep him busy and that he can play with in many different ways. I also will be favoring any toy that will help him learn at multiple age stages, since we will be on the road for some time. I also have to keep in mind storage space.

One of my kid’s favorite toys is his xylophone. This I should tell you will not be making it on our journey simply because it plays music as it rolls along the ground. I can just imagine driving along and constantly hearing “London Bridge is Falling Down” playing in the back of the RV. So no, this will not come even though it is one of his prize possessions.

One of the first toy sets I will pack is a set of water toys that we got at Target. The set includes a frog, a duck and a turtle stuffed animal that are designed for bath time. What I love about these is that they can act as multiple types of toys: stuffed animals, bath time toys and even a swim time floating device. I do not have to worry about them getting dirty because they are easy to wash and dry quickly.

Another toy set that my kid loves is his Soft Baby Blocks that come with his name custom designed on them as well as with numbers, shapes and animals. He has loved playing with these for the last six months and will probably continue to play with them for the next year. They are really wonderful in helping him learn motor-skills, building, spelling his name, learning letters, numbers and helping him identify various shapes and animals. You can order your own set of personalized Soft Baby Blocks at: http://www.etsy.com/shop/SoftBabyBlocks. You can also get a set with fruit and vegetables to start them on a path of healthy eating.

Another toy we will be taking is a noise ball that helps him learn shapes. It plays music when you throw it (and has an off switch). It is open in the center and you can drop plastic shapes through it. Even though it takes up a bit of space, it is sturdy and gives him a great ball to kick around when he gets a bit older. Also we can store it in the compartments under the RV, saving us space inside the RV. He has a soft stuffed soccer ball that he loves to play with that I am going to consider taking too.

We will also be taking a couple of books for him. He loves his Very Hungry Caterpillar book, which helps learn numbers and foods. He also loves his Curious George books and doll. I love that even at 10 months he gets excited to read when we bring out the stuffed monkey and book. I want to take these to continue his excitement for reading. We will also bring his children’s illustrated Bible so he has plenty of awesome illustrated stories to read.

I know this sounds like a lot, but all the stuffed toys can be compressed to fit easily in the RV. To do this I will put each toy in a Ziplock bag and suck all the air out of it with a straw.  The books do not take up much space and the noise ball can be stored below the RV. All of these toys should give him plenty of learning fun when he is not out and about discovering the world and playing with sticks and leaves.
